This animatic is the beginning plot of my pre-production short film, “The Bears’ Return”. This story is about a veterinarian who saved a bear cub's life with surgery to remove the bear trap from his front paw. Later on, the father bear & his cub return the favor to the veterinarian by saving her life from wolves.
In this beginning plot, I introduce the veterinarian.
This animatic has been selected in the INSIGHTS 2021 exhibition CSULB, and published in their virtual galler
I hope, through this story, to bring a message that human should maintain a balance between their conquests to nature and their protection and preservation to our mother nature.
Because, mankind, ourselves, will be responsible of the consequences eventually.
The character design in The Bears’ Return is inspired by the image of hunters from Changbai Mountain in northeast China. People from this region are known for their tall, strong physiques, which influenced the design of the hunter characters. In the film, the father and son hunters are depicted as shape-shifting figures who frequently transform between human and bear forms. To reflect this, I used the physical traits of northeastern Chinese people as the reference for the character design. This choice also connects to the folk tales from northeast China that I collected during the early development of the story, many of which feature encounters between humans and bears in snowy mountain forests.
